BuddyPress First Letter Avatar is a simple plugin that gives a colour coded avatar based on a letter from the username of the user, for users that have not set an avatar image. It’s an alternative to assigning a Gravatar or similar. It also performs the same task for Groups.

Installation is simply a case of installing and activating the plugin, it starts working immediately. There are some configuration settings; you can choose which letter of the username to use as the avatar and you can also choose only to use the first letter avatar even if the user has uploaded an avatar image. The settings page also allows you to choose to have round avatars on your site and there are three avatar sets that you can chose.

I found this plugin worked very well out of the box and it helped make a site with a lot of default avatars look more varied and colourful, also users seemed to warm to members with these as avatars rather than the impersonal default anonymous grey avatar. I give this plugin 9 out of 10, it is simple to use and effective.

Nice Plugin!

I love the plugin! Looks so much nicer than blank spaces on the website for users who have not uploaded their own avatar or picture! Only problem that I have with it is that I wish I could change the size of the Letters in the settings for the plugin. Would make it look so much more sleek in my chat [...]and elsewhere! Great Plugin; Simple and best

Awesome plugin with clean code and regular updates. [...]Only thing I have issue is the letter "R" and "S". They are both in similar color (shades of blue). Since many names start with R and S, if they were made of different colors, it would look best. Just my opinions. And thanks for giving this plugin free. Read more »
